Declaration of Major

For a major in the School of Natural Sciences, continuing students must have a 2.0 science GPA in courses taken towards the intended major or minor and emphasis requirements (including MATH 005 and CHEM 001). Additionally, in accordance with the Early Progress Policy, students must complete their first-level math and chemistry courses prior to being admitted to the major.

  • First time freshman will not be allowed to change their major until the Early Progress Policy has been satisfied

  • Transfer students who do not meet the selection criteria for a major in the School of Natural Sciences at the point of admission are unable to declare a major within the School after admission or matriculation.

  • All Major Change forms must be accompanied by a Graduation Planner.  Advisors will use this document to ensure all degree requirements can be completed within the allotted 9 terms of enrollment at UC Merced, per the Normal Progress to Degree policy.

  • Demajored students requesting to change their major must refer to the Demajored Information.

A student’s request for a change of major or minor may be denied if the science GPA is less than a 2.0. In the event of a denial, a student may request another change of major or minor into the School of Natural Sciences after the Early Progress Policy criteria has been satisfied and the science GPA has reached 2.0.

Major Change and Minor Change forms are avilable on the Office the Registrar's site.
